“We cannot stay trapped here,” Cai said as they looked around the small house in a panic.

“What else are we supposed to do?” Celeste said. “We’re trapped. The plague has surrounded every inch of space outside.”

“Well, we aren’t safe here for long, either. Soon it will push through the cracks and enter, even if it means pushing the stones apart. We need to get out of here.”

“I can take us to Yggdrasil,” Astra said.

Cai looked at her in confusion and distress. “But you are the forest. If you cease to be embodied in physical form, then you will cease to be Astra. I cannot lose you too.”

“You will not lose me,” she smiled reassuringly at him. “I can be both things at once. Just because I have been here with you, does not mean that I have not also been in Yggdrasil.”

“How can you be two things at once?” Brynlee asked. “That doesn’t seem possible at all.”

“Trust me, child, there is much more possible than most people know. I am the forest and all of the many things within it, and I am also the heart of Yggdrasil as the embodiment you see before you in this physical female form. I need not sacrifice one to be the other.”

“I’m not a child,” Brynlee scoffed.

“Really?” Lopt said to her with a quizzical raise of his eyebrow. “That’s the only thing you got from what she just said?”

“Button can be two things at once, too,” Tara said as she twisted her fingers around in Astra’s long hair that reached the ground. “Button is both a bear and a hero.”

Astra giggled at the adorable child as Cai lifted Tara into his arms.

“And Button is very good at being both things,” Astra said as she smiled.

Tara nodded in complete agreement.

“Promise me that doing this will not harm you in any way,” Cai said to Astra with a serious tone lacing his voice. “Swear to it.” He was desperate not to lose another woman he loved.

“I promise.”

“All right then,” Lopt said. “If we’re heading to the forest, I think we should leave now. Astra, I can help you, this is a lot of people to convoy there.”

Lopt and Cai gathered all of the children and the boy’s mother between them and Astra and Celeste. Lopt held his hand out toward Astra, and when their fingers met, a soft movement of air began to swirl around the group. Celeste held onto the hands of the boy and his mother since they looked nervous and gave the woman a reassuring smile.

“You might want to tell Button to close his eyes,” Cai bent forward and whispered to Tara.

“No, thank you,” she said in her brave little voice. “He likes to see what’s going on.”

Brynlee’s attention moved from watching Astra’s long hair swirl around her with the growing magic to the tufts of plagued air that had started to seep up through the floorboards and into the house. She was just about to warn them it was too late,
